July 23, 2010- Erik M. Ellis of Alexander, Arkansas caught “The
Big One” around 10 a.m. on a hot and sunny morning. The wind
was blowing about 15-20 mph and the 82 degree water was
white capping on Lake Monticello in Drew County, Arkansas.
Erik was fishing in 34’ water that was well below the 22’
thermocline. He was using 17 lb. Stren Fishing line with a
watermelon seed baby Brush Hog. After getting hung up 6 of 10
times on the brush and stumps; it hit and then stopped. Erik
thought he was once again hung up and was about ready to cut
his line. He bumped it one more time and it took off. It took just
over an hour for him to land the Florida strand Large Mouth
Bass measuring 26.5 inches and weighting 13 lbs.-3 oz. “The
Big One” did not get away today.
Erik M. Ellis
Fishing Lake Dardanelle is a favorite pastime of several Arkansas residents and if you pay close
attention to where these savvy bank fishermen congregate a good day of fishing is probably closer than
you think.
Not everyone is mesmerized by driving down the lake at seventy miles an hour trying to be the first
angler to their favorite hotspot or even trolling or paddling around in search of fish. Many anglers are quite
content to find a nice pleasant spot to stake out in their chair on the bank to enjoy some fishing and the
great outdoors by relaxing and catching fish.
We are blessed to live by a river system that is so diverse and has so many different species of fish for
anglers to pursue. Within the immediate area we also have several nice areas for folks to visit and enjoy a
little fishing.
Shoal Bay Recreation Area near new Blaine is one such area. It is excellent for bank fishing with easy
access and shade. You can catch all types of fish including bream, bass, catfish, and crappie. In the edge
of the woods there is even a nice trail that leads into the narrows with several places to fish and there are
even some benches for you to sit on if you forget your chair.
Piney Bay is another superb area for bank fishing with a super nice and convenient area located just off
of highway 64. There is a large area that extends all the way under the Interstate-40 Bridge with easy
access and several different species of fish for anglers to pursue.
Another good area is Mill Creek off of Highway 64 and Mill Creek Road. This area has been a crappie
hotspot for years and you will know when they are biting as anglers will be on the bank and camped out in
boats around the bridges as well.
Thanks to the good folks from the city of Russellville, Pleasant View Park provides a nice setting and
some good bank fishing opportunities as well. Easy access and lots of parking are at a premium, but be
sure to go on a cool or cloudy day because there is not an abundance of shade.
Dardanelle Bay is a personal favorite of mine, but I do spend most of my time there in a bass boat.
There are several spots to fish from the bank and an abundance of shade and some areas with easy
access to the bank are also pluses for anglers looking for a nice area to fish.
Although the fishing pier on the golf course side has been taken out there are a few places you can still
get to the bank on that side of the bay. This area used to be a hotspot, but someone at the Corps of
Engineers decided it didn’t need to be mowed anymore making it almost impossible to fish there.
If catfishing is your desire the area below the dam on either side of the river presents anglers lots of
options and some of the best catfishing action anywhere. During the summer months anglers can be found
fishing in this area 24-7.
Delaware Bay is another hotspot for catfishermen as the old highway bed that runs parallel to Highway
22 on the north side is one of the best spots on the lake to catch fish. When the fish are biting along the
old road bed there will be a large gathering of folks there to let you know it is time.
Lake Dardanelle State park has also emerged as an awesome spot to fish from the bank as well. On
any given day you can find folks fishing from the visitor center bank all the way down to the old boat ramp
on the north end of the park.
The pier that runs along the boat ramp just across from the weigh-in pavilion and the new boardwalk is
probably one of the most popular fishing spots on the entire lake. Every species of fish on Lake Dardanelle
can be caught from the pier, but many catfishermen have found this area to be one of the best on the lake.
The only downside of fishing from the pier is that the large rocks will cause you to get hung up from time
to time. A little extra tackle will definitely be a necessity when fishing from the pier.
Whether it is one of the spots mentioned above or a personal favorite that you hope no one ever finds
out about, I hope your late summer and fall plans involve a little fishing and a chance to enjoy all the
benefits that go with a fishing trip to the Arkansas River Valley.
